Case study - Movex SCP: Intentia's New Supply Chain
Planning Component
Intentia, one of the world's
leading e-collaboration solution providers, recently decided
to add a supply chain planning and optimization product (SCP)
to their Movex line of offerings. Movex SCP would complement
Intentia's existing Movex advanced production planning product,
which contains planning and simulation technology. Intentia
had created their previous technologies in house, but they
decided to seek outside help in developing an optimization
module. Intentia wanted their partner to be a specialist component
provider with cutting edge technology, a recognized brand,
and the willingness and ability work closely with them to
bring their product to the market quickly. After evaluating
several options, Intentia chose to work with Dash Optimization
and use Dash's XpressMP modeling and optimization components.
Solution
Using Dash Optimization's fast track modeling component, Intentia
was able to fully customize XpressMP and embed the XpressMP
optimization engine into their final Movex SCP product. A
key advantage of using XpressMP was the ability to express
the supply chain planning problem quickly and easily, yet
in a way which contains the full detail and magnitude of global
industrial problems. This gave Intentia the power to hide
the complexity of the optimizer from the user while still
maintaining the ability to reconfigure the model and control
the actions of the optimizer. The close partnership between
Intentia and Dash during the development of the Movex SCP
produced a reliable, flexible, and easily maintainable prototype
in only 4 months.
How it works
The SCP component within Movex solves supplier, production,
distribution, and inventory constraint decisions using cost
optimization and by balancing supply and demand at maximum
profitability. Supply chain planning incorporates the sourcing
questions of what, how much, when, and where. Starting from
an estimate of customer demand, the overall balance of the
supply chain can be determined including distribution, production,
usage, raw material consumption, and build-up of inventory.
It is because of optimization that distribution costs can
be traded off against production cost so that organizations
can focus on delivering the most profitable products in the
most profitable way.
Summary
Intentia formed a close partnership with Dash Optimization
that has resulted in the release of a new, value added component
for their Movex e-collaboration solution that was ready to
market in less than 16 months.
